Poetry-death-hot-line by Gary Hughes

Good afternoon, you’re through
to Gary Hughes at ‘Poetry Death’.
Can I just start by taking
your name and address
so I can steal your identity
and know where you live.
Brilliant. So, you’re phoning
about the lilies in your
living room, how their aroma
is fading and also how
their drooping petals echo
your melancholic mood.
But did you not realise
they can also reflect
your lack of virility,
whilst their funereal
connotations could highlight
your morbid predilection.
I realise it’s late in the poem
But could I interest
you in a structure?
What I would suggest;
a subtle rhyme scheme
could be employed best
to trail out when
there is little left
to say but ‘Thank You
for calling ‘Poetry Death’’.
