Ladies and Gentlemen, Hinchcliffe & Hodgson are proud to present a reading of their latest work, “Rise” inspired by the abstract painting of Bridget Riley. Painted in 1968 and currently on show at the Graves Art Gallery, Rise consists of 74 horizontal bands of 4 different colours in various orders from bottom to top.

White: Monet wrote: Too many colours were the enemy of colour, but Riley wrote: The music of colour was what she wanted…
Green: Heard it through the grape vine. Now, I’m about to lose my mind…
Mauve: Hey Jude, sing a sad song and make it better…
Orange: Fire! Fire! You’re my hearts desire!

White: Sacrifice the beauty of a painted colour to preserve and enhance the faint and fleeting glimmers they generate.
Mauve: Lilac concrete at dusk. Light as dust.
Orange: Glorious sunset! Yellow mustard with red ketchup.
Green: Grass stains on trutex. Sight takes you by surprise.

White: She knew that colours inevitably lead you to the outside world.
Orange: Abandoned space hopper grinning from a sub-urban lawn
Green: Emerald rock on a bony white finger. Rude to point!
Mauve: First humans see the far side of the Moon, reading from Genesis.

White: When the colours remain constant they echo and amplify each other.
Green: Capillary action to capacity. Saturate your attention!
Orange: Lucozade is still for the old and infirm
Mauve: Pope Paul VI denounces use of any form of artificial contraception.

White: The exact hues and intensity are vital and must be kept constant.
Green: 10 milligrams of progesterone, 0.15 milligrams of estrogen. Annual Pill sales: $150m.
Mauve: Purple priest gorges himself on Palma violets
Orange: Orange monk sings on Oxford Street

White: This is a work of absolute precision with a meticulously accurate finish.
Mauve: Tidal river. Eb and flow. Slippery lilac mud.
Orange: Action Man logo leans into… ACTION! Peppered with bullet holes.
Green: Centre court is being aerated. Pleasures, sudden, swift and unexpected.

White: The pleasures of this large scale work are enigmatic and elusive.
Orange: Tie die, skinny rib, roll neck, woollen C&A sweater.
Mauve: Businessman there, drink my wine, come and dig my earth.
Green: Dock leaves soothe, the nettle stings. Shall we prevent or shall we cure?

White: Move around to find points where the light sensations are released and actual colours generate other colours.
Mauve: Purple Barracuda from Mattel races…
Orange: Hotwheels. Loop the loop. So optimistic!
Green: …races with a near mint firebird. Crowned with a spike right through my head!

White: Riley seeks the “essence of vision,” believing objects are only agents of a greater reality.
